Finishing Holds

Of the many varied techniques of Ju Jutsu the finishing holds are the most interesting and complex. ln fact l can't think of any other martial art which has so many. They are often called punishing holds. because they add insult to the injury already inflicted on an opponent.
Any joint in the body can be locked up or immobilized. fingers, wrist, elbows and shoulders can be painfully trapped with a single technique or with a combination lock. foot ankle, knee and hip locks can all be used to gain an instant and painful submission. chokes strangles and necklocks can be applied in the standing or the prone positions.
ln fact they can be used from any position you can think of. they can be applied with either the arms or legs and once applied they are very difficult to get out of.
Most of these holds are banned from combat sports such as wrestling or judo but Ju Jutsu is not shackled by rules, so anything goes. the people who apply these holds to you aren’t fighting to the rules anyway and you will need to know how to get out of them using methods not taught in any combat sport.
Are these holds any good for street defence? It will depend on what situation you find yourself in because grappling is not the first choice in a street encounter.
It can be too dangerous in so far as you may be attacked by someone else while engaging with the first opponent. ln such a case, it is better to use rapid fire blows backed up by sweeps, joint attacks and stomps.
However if you are already into grappling you must have knowledge of how to finish it quickly. These holds are very important to police and security personnel because you can’t just batter the person you are trying to arrest.
The Kempo Goshin Jutsu art l teach recognizes that there are times when you need to know finishing locks and holds and other times when you wont. But its safer to have the knowledge just in case you are taken down, plus it will round out your ;martial arts knowledge. through experience, I've found that once you master these moves you can control even the largest of opponents.
Though you must practice hard and regularly to acquire the skills. Only then will ;the techniques become ingrained into the subconscious.
